Open Mics in Coffee Shops (Take 2)

These open mics have become a part of my biweekly routine and I’m loving it. Last Saturday I brought my brother’s camera along (I promise I’ll be getting my own one day).

I’ll be highlighting a few of the performers in this post.

First up, enjoy these pictures a friend of mine took.

An Untitled Poem

Today’s the day. I’ve decided to put my heart on my sleeve and share one of my pieces with the world. If you read my piece on Open Mics, you already know I’ve been writing poetry since the seventh grade. That’s about seven years. This is basically my lucky year for poetry.

So, here it goes:

My Haitian Vacation: A Return to the Motherland

I wouldn’t consider my summer one of the Hot Girl variety, but it was a fun one, nonetheless. This summer was one of travel, adventure, and newness. It was also my first time out of the country in six years.

I went on a cruise at the start that gave me a small taste of Haiti. Labadee was the tourist side of my ancestral plane, but it was also a place where I could hear the melodies of my native tongue.

I Love my Melanin Because…

It is a reminder that the sun just can’t get enough of me.

The light-skin vs. dark-skin battle has made it’s way into my Instagram explore page again and I’m tired of it. Sometimes, embracing my God-given skin tone feels like a political statement. I remember being in middle school and reading The Skin I’m in by Sharon G. Flake. The whole time I was thinking, “Finally, someone who gets it.”

Exploring the City: Downtown West Palm

Here’s another day spent with the Summer Writing Club. It was quite the adventure. Downtown West Palm Beach, aka City Place, is pretty huge. We spent a chunk of our day there and we still only hit a little bit of the city. I’m used to City Place at night, but during the day it’s actually pretty inviting.

We met with a publisher and she gave out a bunch of cool books. I posted about them on Rae’s Reads and Reviews, so check that out if you’re interested.

I brought the camera along again and I took soooo many pictures. Here’s a few.

Exploring the City: Downtown Lake Worth

One of my teachers from high school hosts a writing workshop over the summer where he shows students around the city and helps them catch that creative bug. This was the first year I actually had a chance to participate.

We walked around Downtown Lake Worth, exploring local shops and talking to some of the owners. We went to an art gallery, an art shop, a book store, and a few other places to write about what we saw. It was a lot of fun. I brought the camera along with me on the journey.
